Boonie Mayfield A.K.A. Boon Doc (who’s surname is a not to Curtis Mayfield) is a hip-hop and Neo Soul producer from Denver, CO. Music took a hold of Boonie at an early age when he started listening to music from the classic like Anita Baker, Michael Jackson and Luther Vandross. At the age of seven is when he was introduced to Hip-hop music and after this his love for music grew into something greater.
Boonie Mayfield: Well on his Way to becoming a Household Name
In heavy rotation in his Walkman were cassette tapes (Yup that’s right-Cassettes!) by groups like Leaders of the New School (which are one of my favorite Hip-Hop groups of all time), A Tribe Called Quest, and Pete Rock and CL Smooth. In his teenage years is when he started writing poetry and rhymes, and it wasn’t until High School when he had his first studio experience recording a song with a close friend/mentor.
After not having anyone to produce the soul-infused beats that reflected his own style as an MC Boon learned how to produce beats himself. With hardly no money and no formal music training, Boonie Mayfield began making beats on a Reason 2.0 that a friend gave him since he couldn’t even afford to buy equipment.
After many years of blood, sweat, and tears has managed to make a name for himself and has been praised by fellow producers, artists and music lovers around the world for his unique, soulful and funky sound as well as his humble attitude. Boonie Mayfield credits YouTube as being a huge part of his success today. His highly esteemed YouTube videos has had over 5 million views, including one of his MPC videos at over 900,000 views alone.
Boonie Mayfield won the first place title in the Red Bull Big Tune producer’s competition (the highly respected national hip-hop producer battle) and is the reigning champion since he won the title last year as well. Denver’s Westword Magazine also named Boonie Mayfield the Best Hip-Hop Producer for 2010. With the mass interest he has sparked around the world, and his unstoppable hunger for creative growth is what’s going to keep him going in this industry. He is ridiculously talented, and is bringing the rocky mountain sound down to the masses. His work is the true form of Hip-hop soul!
